SUMMARY:

The main aim of this ongoing research is to study how the rural/traditional populations of the cocais in Maranhão are affected in the dimensions of work and nature by the advance of capitalism in the countryside, taking into account the intensification of developmentalism since the military dictatorship (1964-1985) and the incentive to modernize the Brazilian countryside.  Maranhão is placed within the national project that prioritizes profit to the detriment of the way of life of rural populations, who are constantly placed as obstacles to achieving development. In 1969, the enactment of the Sarney Land Law legitimizes land concentration and regulates modern latifundia. Land is transferred from the public to the private domain, making it easier for the richest to acquire land and reinforcing the exclusion of Maranhão's peasantry (Asselin, 1982). With the state's facilitation, economic groups are called upon to enter Maranhão's lands and set up their enterprises. In Maranhão's Cocais, the 1970s were marked by the arrival of businessmen who set up agro-industries and other economic enterprises. As noted in the CPT (Pastoral Land Commission) sources, the conflicts involving the traditional peoples and communities of Maranhão and the enterprises arising from the expansion of capital in the countryside are only growing, most of them involving the relationship that these peoples establish with nature. The invasion of capital causes alarming social and environmental injustices against historically established ways of life in the Cocais region of Maranhão. In addition, many rural workers are co-opted to work in these enterprises, suffering various forms of exploitation at work. The methodology of this research involves oral history, as well as the use of newspapers, legislation, official state documents, statistical data and reports. The expected results of this research are the perception of the damage caused to the lives of rural populations in the Cocais region of Maranhão, based on their relationships with work, land and nature. It is hoped that the people's ways of life with their territory and in the face of capital will be revealed.
