SUMMARY:

This qualification report aims to present the activities of ongoing dissertation research on the exploitation of child labor in domestic work in the city of Barras, Piauí. The study is being carried out in the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program in Society and Culture, in research line 1: Work, education and the rural world at the State University of Piauí (UESPI), entitled “Domestic captivity: exploitation of child labor in the city of
Barras-PI (1980-1990)”. Brazilian history is marked by peasant children for centuries being removed from their homes and taken to the homes of others through promises of study opportunities and comfort, however, as soon as they arrive at their destination, they are subjected to long working hours. According to the International Labor Organization - ILO (2021), child labor in someone else's home is one of the most
common and traditional forms of child labor. In view of the above, this research aims to understand the historical strategies of production and reproduction of domestic child labor, based on the memory of the childhood of women born in the city of Barras-PI marked by domestic exploitation. To this end, we will use the methodology of Oral History based on the studies of Alessandro Portelli (2010), José Carlos Sebe Bom Meihy (2015) and Verena Alberti (2010), with the use of semi-structured interviews and legislation documents such as the Child Statute and Adolescents (ECA) and the 1988 Constitution (CF/88). Furthermore, reports from the International Labor Organization (ILO) are also important. Therefore, the proposed study starts from the perspective of Hybrid Oral History, in which, in addition to the analysis of oral sources, other types of sources will be used. Thus, the considerations of Angela Davis (2016), Silvia Federici(2019), Beatriz Nascimento (2021), Alba Pessoa (2018), Martins (2009) are fundamental to reflections on gender and child labor discussed in the chapter presented.
